UTU Publications and Videos

The following online booklets and videos are published by the UTU. They provide a history of the UTU, an explanation of member’ jobs and benefits, an explanation of grievance procedures, a description of the political process and the UTU’s political action committee, an explanation of how to proceed when injured on the job and a synopsis of why it is important to join a union.

Why You Should Join a Union

This booklet explains the role of the representative when an employee has been called for investigation. It outlines a defendant’s rights in an investigation and explains principles basic to the investigation rule.

Manual for Rail Local Chairpersons

The manual contains a brief history of railroad unions, a synopsis of the UTU’s structure and the local chairperson’s role in it, UTU recommendations on the proper procedures for pursuing time claims and other grievances, and an overview of federal legislation governing the railroad industry up to and including the Railway Labor Act.

 

Bus Department Chairperson’s Manual

The purpose of this manual is to keep the local chairperson abreast of the changing times and to give him or her the necessary tools to cope with these changes. The method of handling grievances in this day and age is not one where “brute force” and “table pounding” take precedence, but rather it is an age where the local chairperson must be a “learned” individual with full knowledge of the agreement, and armed with the best of skills possible.

This manual explains the duties of the local legislative representative and his or her role in the legislative process.

The publication above is a coloring book for children explaining the jobs of people represented by the United Transportation Union. The UTU is happy to make these pictures available to you for your education and enjoyment. Now it’s your job to color them in.

Labor Unions and Railroads

Together in Labor Solidarity

“Together in Labor Solidarity” is a video that was presented to UTU members and guests at the Reno, Nevada, regional meeting in June 2006. The video explains the UTU’s recent return to the AFL-CIO and its renewed commitment to labor solidarity with other rail labor organizations.
