Q: What union will I belong to?
A: The United Transportation Union. The UTU represents more than 125,000 active and retired railroad, bus, transit and airline employees in the U.S. and Canada.
Q: What does the union do for me?
A: The UTU works to win major battles. We know that if one employee loses, then all are threatened. We win rights. Then we protect them.
Q: Why should I be a member?
A: If you are not united as employees, you would not have as much strength to win a good contract or settle grievances fairly. When everyone belongs, it makes you strong and enables you to meet the company on a level playing field.
Q: Why do we need a union?
A: Labor unions are an important part of this country’s history. They grew from humble beginnings and many workers have sacrificed, even died, for the rights you now enjoy. While employers promise fair and equal treatment, the reality all too often is that the almighty dollar comes before job security, decent wages, dignity and humane working conditions.
Q: How will we form a union?
A: For detailed information you can contact the National Mediation Board (NMB) website at www.nmb.gov and click on the “representation manual” button. In brief, the process includes signing authorization cards (employer does not see them), an investigation by the NMB to ensure their validity, and a vote conducted using the NMB’s telephone and Internet voting systems. Once the union is certified by the NMB, it will be authorized to help negotiate a first contract on your behalf.
