Disability insurance for SMART Transportation Division members

Disability insurance for railroad workers

Effective July 1, 2013, the 26-week benefit period has been increased to 34 weeks with no change in premium. The new benefit period will apply to all disabilities that begin on or after July 1, 2013. Any disabilities that began prior to July 1, 2013, will be paid under the 26-week benefit provision.

The SMART Transportation Division has renewed its contract (effective July 1, 2013) with Anthem Life Insurance Co. to provide a group voluntary short-term disability plan for all rail members. Coverage will continue to be automatic unless members choose to waive coverage or “opt-out.”

The disability insurance plan provides a basic “safety net” of coverage for SMART TD members and is designed to work in combination with Railroad Retirement sickness benefits.

The Anthem plan now pays up to $346 per week for up to 34 weeks a year and provides 24-hour coverage, seven days a week, for accidents and sickness. The 24/7 coverage means on- and off-duty coverage for accidents and sickness.

The cost remains $34.50 per month and is collected through payroll deduction.
